A central fixture of Oronoma is its prolific organic vegetable garden, taking full advantage of Virgina’s long growing season; rich, organic soil; hot summer days; reliable rainfall and a seemingly endless supply of horse manure. Spring, summer and fall always mean an abundance of freshly-picked vegetables and herbs, with lots of surplus consigned to the deep freezer for winter usage. Accompanying the garden is the canning operation, creating hundreds of jars of hot sauces, tomato sauce, salsas and pickles each year. Along with the garden, Oronoma also has a large, traditional greenhouse. Built in England by the venerable British firm Hartley Botanics, the greenhouse was shipped to the US and erected at Oronoma in the Fall of 2022. The greenhouse is both aesthetically harmonious with the farm and functional as well: it extends the outdoor growing season by allowing for early germination of seeds, and provides a winter source of fresh vegetables and flowers.
